Hello! My name is Susan Solgat and I have taught Fifth Grade in Marlette for 26 years. I live in the Marlette area with my husband Gerald, daughter Lily and son Logan. I teach Language Arts to all fifth grade students. I graduated from Central Michigan University and earned a Master's Degree through Marygrove College.
I look forward to a positive and productive year! We have awesome novels to read--Maniac Magee is a favorite and the students are enjoying his journey to repair a racially divided town. In addition to reading throughout the week, students are learning about figurative language and the mechanics of writing. Grammar skills are always reinforced and spelling tests are given every Friday. Remember...If your student has their study sheet signed before the test, they will receive Five Bonus Points!
Fifth Grade Camp will take place this year. This is an overnight camping experience and parents are encouraged to attend as well. Forms and information will be sent home in December with a payment plan. Covenant Hills Campground is located in Otisville, Michigan. This camp offers a high elements course (zip line), low elements, archery, canoeing, wall climbing, fishing, and an inflatable blob. Teamwork and problem solving skills are reinforced throughout all of the activities. All meals are included and prepared by a very talented chef.
UPDATE: The Fifth Grade Camping Trip forms were sent home before Christmas. If you did not receive one, please contact me. The first payment is due by March 11th. We hope both students and parents will consider attending this trip! If you have questions or concerns, please let us know. Thank you!
I continue to encourage the students to study their spelling and vocabulary words each week. The week of January 25th we will begin a new novel titled My Louisiana Sky. The students really enjoy the novels we read in this class. They amaze me with their opinions, conversations and creative minds!
Chief McGinnis started teaching DARE class on January 20th. The students will learn about resistance strategies, communication styles, responding to pressure, bullying issues and how to make safe and responsible choices.
It has been a great year and I have enjoyed this class very much!
